“It’s easy to understand why we named our company ‘Wine&Soul’ a project that we put our heart and soul into. Where we create warm and personal wines that symbolize our life.”

Two hearts, one great wine

“All we had was a dream, a vision, a project in common that would embrace our life as a couple.”

Jorge Serôdio

Jorge was born and bred a Douro Valley man, with no intention of ever leaving. Since a very young age, his heart has been in the vineyards and the valleys. His family has a strong lineage and tradition of owning “Quintas” and of producing Port wines, making him the 5th generation of the family to produce port wines. Because of his close connection to wines, Jorge decided to study enology. During his studies, he was already working and collaborating with prestigious “Quintas” around the Douro. In 1999 he joined forces with recognized winemakers and revolutionized not only Douro wines, but also Sandra’s heart. After just two years, Wine&Soul was born.

Sandra Tavares

Sandra is from Lisbon, where she studied agronomy. After completing her degree in Lisbon, she decided to travel to Piacenza in Italy to take her master’s of enology. With her heart back in Portugal, there was only one region where she hadn’t explored or worked, the Douro Valley. In 1999, she came to the Douro for an internship, and that job opened the doors to her future home. In the same year, Sandra met Jorge, her husband and business partner. Just two years later, they got married and Wine&Soul was born.

"Our goal is to create wines that express the full character of the traditional vineyards and varieties in the Douro Valley"

winesoul-aboutus-montagens-2001-1

The innovative yet rustic winery was founded nearly ten years ago by Jorge Serôdio Borges and his wife Sandra Tavares da Silva, two of the most celebrated winemakers in Portugal, who wanted to channel their extensive experience into a winery that would showcase the traditional varieties of the Douro Valley on an international scale.

Their first creation was a wine called Pintas, named after the couple’s restless English Pointer. What was initially an old Port lodge is today a reflection of the Douro’s history and tradition, using grapes from old vines with more than 40 mixed grape varieties. In it the grandeur, breadth and richness of this region.

“We started making a garage wine we called ‘Pintas’ (spots), a single vineyard red wine that comes from a very old vineyard with companion planting, where over 40 varieties grow together.”

Sandra Tavares

winesoul-aboutus-montagens-2001-2

Sandra Tavares da Silva and Jorge Serôdio Borges began their adventure in 2001. In the beginning, the young couple had no vineyards and no wine, but they shared a dream, a personal project to which they have devoted themselves body and soul.

The name Wine & Soul is the product of their passion and total commitment to wine. From the start, this company’s work has focused on a tireless search for exceptional vines in the Pinhão Valley – the historic heart of great Port wines – to give them a voice.

winesoul-aboutus-montagens-2001-4

“We wanted to make a full-bodied wine, wild and vertiginous, that would illustrate the flair and colossal landscape of the Douro Valley. Pintas just shows the best version of the Douro, the strength, the enthusiasm and the perfect balance with long and lasting finish.”

Jorge Serôdio Borges

until 2008

Developing the wines

"We then crafted the other wines in the Wine & Soul portfolio: The red Pintas Character, a blend of 5 distinct plots that surround the Pintas Vineyard. The white Guru, produced from high-altitude very old vineyards."

And our extremely special 5G Port Wine, a very, very old Tawny Port that originates from a blend of several very old Port wines, most of them over a hundred years old.

Quinta da Manoella

"A fabulous estate planted primarily with very old vineyards, facing south and south-east, some of them over a hundred years old."

winesoul-2009-quinta-da-manoella-1

"Our very first wine, Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas, quickly became one of the best and most remarkable wines in the Douro."

Jorge is the 5th generation of a long line of wine producers and winery owners. Therefore, in 2009 Sandra and Jorge acquired “Quinta da Manoella”, an estate with a history that dates back to 1838.

The Quinta da Manoella vineyards are over a hundred years old, bordered on both sides by young vineyards that are 30 years old, some even more recent. Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas was immediately recognized as one of the greatest wines of Douro.

Present

wine-&-Soul-about-us

Wine & Soul embodies the spirit of a new wave of top quality Douro Wines, sourced from very old vineyards, low yields, limited production showcase the character of each particular vineyard and the very special nature of each unique terroir. Wines crafted with minimum intervention, letting nature and terroir take the lead and speak for themselves.

“We respect this region’s land, values and traditions by making terroir wines with great aging potential. Today we have much more experience, we understand and know the vineyards much better, which is helpful. But the most important thing is the love and passion we feel for our wines and our company. This is the same as it was back in 2001.”

Wine & Soul has become the image of the modern Douro: a Douro where nature and each vineyard’s personality speak the loudest. Our wines are living proof that the traditional vineyards that produce great Vintage Ports are also capable of producing great Douro wines.

The love and passion we feel for our wines and our company is the same as it was back in 2001

winesoul-present-4

“Over the years we have looked for old vineyards, preferably those that have traditionally been used to make outstanding Vintage Port. We believe there is a close connection and strong relationship between Port and Douro wines, and are keen to show that the best port wine vineyards are also the very best vineyards for the greatest Douro wines.”

Since it was created, Wine&Soul’s philosophy has been based on respect for the family legacy passed down from a long tradition of winemaking in the Douro region. But we do not simply accept this noble inheritance: we seek to enhance it with a fresh vision.

Our work is the result of the character and hard work of those who, every day, give their Heart and Soul to this project.

Our policy has always been to help drive the development of the local economy and families. Our team is mostly from this region, and in 2014 we decided to join Bagos D'Ouro. We became a partner of this social program to help children/teenagers from the region with their studies and their future.

bagos-douro

About Bagos d'Ouro

It all began with a dream. The dream of a more just society. Of a more balanced, equitable and, above all, inclusive Douro. Where all children have equal opportunities. Where new generations play an active role in reversing the cycle of poverty and social exclusion through EDUCATION, the “most powerful weapon to change the world”.

“We are a privately owned charitable institution in Portugal (IPSS). Established in 2010, our mission is to promote the education of children and young people in need in the Douro, to drive social inclusion in the region.

Based on a long-term commitment and proximity strategy, we work individually with each child and teen we support, accompanying their educational, social and family life up to their integration into society. Bagos d’Ouro operates in 6 councils in the Douro – Alijó, Armamar, Murça, Sabrosa, São João da Pesqueira and Tabuaço – working with more than 200 children and their families, in a total of around 300 people. In the near future we plan to expand our intervention area to two new boroughs.”

Today’s seeds are the Bagos d’Ouro (Golden Berries) of tomorrow.
